The night didn't start off exactly as I had planned. Kelli and her mom came and picked me up and we were off to the show. Tons of traffic and an hour and a half later we found it. Club Sixteen-Fifty. It was 7 when we got to the line, so we obviously didn't go through with our dinner plans. Now on to the good stuff.
Right after Kelli and I got in line before the show we met Genevieve from the message board. I pulled out my name tags and we wrote our names and PPF numbers on them. Then we went and found some more message boarders. We found Tisha, Maren, Kelly, Amber, and Jenna and they all did the name tag thing too. We all talked for awile and then Genevieve, Kelli, and I decided that we should go back to see Genevieve's friend.
Fast forward to sometime around 8. They finally started to let people in and then when I got up to the window to show my fan club card so me and Kelli could get in, the man at the window asked me if I had already been in because somebody by that name already went in. It was obvious I hadn't gone in. I mean if I had gone in, why would I be trying to get in again? So I showed him my other id's and he finally let us in. Now I have an impersonator out there somewhere.
When we got in side, the place was a big long room with the stage at the very back, a long bar on the left side (as you are walking to the stage), and seating or something on the other side. It looked more like a dance club then a PP show. But every venue is different. I went and saved us a spot while Kelli went to the bathroom and then bought her raffle tickets. I was going to buy my raffle tickets then, but I wasn't sure when they were going to start and I didn't want to miss anything.
A little while later Jason and Alex came out to introduce the opening band. This band was 3 girls -one played bass, one played drums, and one played an acoustic guitar. They didn't have a name yet and it was their first public perormance. Alex said that whoever could think up of the best name for them would get a lifetime free pass to their (meaning the girls) shows. They sounded pretty good especially since it was their first show. Then Jason and Alex came out again to annonce the second opening act. Guess who it was! It was Robert Schwartzman of Rooney. He did his own little one man show (well he only sang one song). But I loved it! He was doing his own little back ups and solos. It was hilarious but in a really good way.
Then PP came out and opened with Rise The Setting Star! I requested that song on the message board and that song means a lot to me. I mean look at this site! I named the site after that song! Then PP played Apply Yourself, Hey now Girl, and In Our Darkest Hour. Alex dedicated 2 of the songs (not Rise The Setting Star) to certain people also. Then Alex talked about how someone he knows or something likes the demo version of this one song more because of the different lyric. That song was Anthem and was also the next song they played. That was followed by Bust A move which was absolutely fantastic. Then they played Somebody's Baby which was also incredibly good. I love hearing the old songs they never play anymore. Then PP played another great oldie, Fine On My Own and then they played Lonely Day. After Lonely Day, Alex said that the next song was going to be special and it was for all of us in here (in California). The special part was Stacy from American Hi-Fi. Stacy played the drums and Jason played a keyboard they had setup by Darren. Lastly, they played Do The Panic. But don't worry! That was just the last song before their little intermission. Do The Panic was actually really funny for me because my camera battery died in the middle of that song, so I really was doing the panic! That song is also one of my favorites because Darren sings back up with Sam and Jacques. Darren should sing more often.
Now it was a short break time. During this time, Kelli saved me by just happening to have a spare camera battery in her bag and I also met Brad. I put some of Brad's pictures up on this site not long ago. He actually happened to be standing right by Kelli the whole time. Now to Part 2 of the show.
For part 2 of the show, PP did a special acoustic set. But first Jason came out and was trying to talk but the sound guy wouldn't turn off the music and turn on the mic. But finally after Jason went off stage the guy stopped the music and PP started the set. This wasn't actually a set though. All that they used for awhile was an acoustic guitar. Jacques came out first and sang a song he wrote about a month ago called Holiday. It was a very nice song and I loved finally hearing Jacques sing by himself. Then Sam came out and said that people always said not to cover The Beatles, but with his dad's support he was going to do it anyways. He also mentioned that he was terrified. He sang and played Mother Nature beautifully. During Sam's solo, Alex came out and quitely played the drums for a minute. Next Alex came out and asked the audience if we wanted to hear a slow song or a fast song. Of course everyone said fast song and he said he thought that's what we would have said and he also said it ws a song that he wrote that the band hadn't even heard yet. The song really souynded more like a slow song than a fast song. His song was really great as well. Then Jason was the next to come out and he had Alex play the keyboard and Robert play the drums. He had to lower the mic so much so he could sing while he played the guitar. Actually, Jason did 2 songs. The first one was short and one of the funniest things of the night. Then Darren came out and covered part of You And Whose Army. But he didn't like how that was going, so he got Sam to come out and play bass and Jason to play drums while he did his Busta rap which everyone loved! That was also one of the funniest moments from the show. It was really nice seeeing everyone do a solo. I wish they would do things like that more often.
Then the acoustic guitar was put away and all the guys came back out on stage and it was time for Is Missing Karaoke! The guys got people out if the audience and played Recently Distressed. Then they did the same for Lisa, and Can't Take It. Ned from Rooney joined the on stage fun for Can't Take It as well. Everybody looked like they were having a blast on stage. I wish I could have been up there rockin with the guys. Oh well, maybe next year. After Can't Take It, these two really tall girls came and stood right in front of us. Kelli and I were so mad because we couldn't see a thing and there was no way they were going to move. But then just as Kelli and I thought we were doomed for the rest of the show, Brad moved and let us stand where he was standing! Thank uou Brad!
After Is Missing Karaoke, PP went back to just PP on stage and played Sleep Machine. The end of that song where Alex, Sam, and Jacques all sing good night together sounded beautiful. Then they went on to perform Winter Wonderland, which Alex introduced as the song you've been able to download all month, The Local Black And Red, and Shadows. All 3 songs sounded great. But the next song was one of the greatest events of the entire night. Alex and Sam switched places and instrumemnts and Alex said this one's from a long time ago when I used to play bass. It was Lava Light! I knew exactly what song it was when he said that and then Jacques sang the entire song. On Polaroid, he only sings the first few verses and Alex sings the rest. But this time Alex only sang back ups! I really wanted to hear Jacques sing lead and now I did -twice if you count his solo! Then they played The Guest, Nobody's Fault, Wishing Well, and ended that part of the show with All Over Again. All 3 songs were awesome. I especially loved when Alex got up on to Jason's drums and was almost swinging from the lights above. That was hilarious! During All Over again, Alex also had another contest like he did at the HOB on 12/19. This time the Sam and Darren side won. The only sad momemnt of this show was when alex said that All Over Again would be the last song. But then that immediately went away because he said they would have an all star ending! Also, Alex said that the best name of the night so far for the girls was Call Me.
For the all star ending, the guys called up all of the other muscians that were there from the bands they have played with and they all rocked out to Surrender! Here is the list of the people I can remember: Ned and another guy from Rooney, Jenny Lewis and at least one other guy from Rilo Kiley, Pete Yorn, who played drums, guys from Kara's Flowers (now Maroon), and more people that I can't remember. The stage was filled and from the looks of it, everyone up there was having a super great time! Moments like that make me want to be in a band.
Then everybody on stage went back stage and the show was over. Kelli and I continued to stand by the stage for a few minutes until I decided that I should buy some raffle tickets. But Suzanne was gone, so we stood in the middle of the floor for awhile. Then I saw Sam and after waiting a few mnutes, I took another picture with him. This is a whole different story all in itself, so if you would like to read about it please use the link at the bottom of this page or at the top of the page called Pictures of Sam and Me. Then Kelli and I went over and sat on the stage until we saw Jacques. Kelli had him sign the shirt I gave her for x-mas that I had Sam, Darren, and Alex sign at the last HOB show. He even gave her a hug.
Then it was raffle time. Alex was raffle guy and Jacques and Darren helped out. Kelli won a California cd single and I tried winning some stuff with her other tickets, but I didn't have any luck. Darren even did things like whoever touches me (as in him) first gets a cd, but I was too far away and I was holding some other stuff. But it was still a lot of fun.
After the raffle I was going to talk to Darren before we left, but then we saw Sam and Kelli wanted to take one more picture of us just to make sure we got a good picture. We went over to Sam and he was talking to someone else, but then when he was trying to draw a picture on her arm at her request I offered them my Sharpie. Sam drew a funny picture of a mans face. Then Sam and I took another picture (the second of the night). I told him to have fun on his tour wherever they end up before they play LA again and Kelli and I left.
That had to be the greatest concert I have ever been to. The entire time the vibe was awesome and everybody seemed like they were having a great time. I can't wait until next year's members only show!
